Prosthetic Contact Lenses Part 2:

Lens Subluxation- When there is a partial dislocation of the crystalline lens.

Nystagmus- Involuntary Shaking of the eyes.

Photophobia- This is quite common, dealing with light sensitivity. There are many different causes.

Scarred and/or opaqued cornea- The causes are due to trauma or illness.

X-Chrome- Where one red lens is used for the treatment of color blindness.

OrthoKeratology (Ortho-K)

Orhto-K is a procedure that reshapes the cornea of the eye using a contact (s). Thus it is used to reduce errors of nearsightedness and astigmatism. Orhto-K uses a reverse geometry contact lens to change the shape of the eye. The purpose is to bring the eye into the correct focus and at the same time compensate for the refractive error. This is possible because the amount of the corneal flattening can be accurately controlled.

The lens is worn at night. A retainer lens must be worn during the day, each day through the process. If this is not done the success of the treatment will revert back to pre-treatment level. Times vary for how long the reshaping will take depending upon your diopters. You will however have some side effects such as glare and halos. When you have reached the desired level you will only need to wear the contact (s) at night.

The typical results are very good. Most professional aim for 20/20. In the FDA clinical study for approval of CRT (one type of lens), 93% achieved 20/32 vision or better. For the study of VST (another type), approximately 95% achieved 20/40 or better and 73% achieved 20/20 or better.

The best candidates are those with myopia of -6.00 or less. It is for anyone of any age with low amounts of astigmatism or myopia. Please see your eye care professional for their recommendation because everyone is different.

These points should be made regarding the safety of wearing contact lenses. Those that are daily wear are worn for 12-16 hours each day. Extended wear contacts are used for a full 24 hours. However Orhto-K is worn for only 8 hours a day.
